Volkswagen SP2 Niagara Blue 1972
In the 1970s, the Brazilian market was quite closed, taxes were dissuasive and therefore not many vehicles were imported, especially " fun cars ". In 1969, the director of Volkswagen do Brasil launched the "Project X": a sports coupé exclusive to the Brazilian market. Three years later, the Volkswagen SP2 arrived on the market. Its name refers to Sao Paulo, the famous Brazilian city where these special cars were manufactured. The SP2 is the most powerful version, equipped with a 4-cylinder flat engine developing 65 hp. Although the look of this Brazilian Volkswagen was immediately appealing, its performance was not as good as that of the local competition, which caused the SP2 to fail to meet with commercial success. Only 10,205 units were produced in Brazil and 5% were sold for export.
