Matra Djet 5 S Gendarmerie BRI

The Matra Djet S5 was the first “sports car” for the French gendarmerie, as well as for the Rapid Intervention Brigade (BRI; a special unit within the gendarmerie). Following a first tryout at the hands of the rapid motorway intervention squads, from April to May of 1966, the BRI purchased three models equipped an R8 Gordini engine of 1255 cm3, giving it 105 hp and pushing its speed limit up to 200 km/h. These patrollers were only seen on the road between 1966 and 1967 but, due to issues of handling on the road at high speeds and misting up, the Matra Djet S5 was quickly replaced by the Alpine A110. With its undeniable flair, the Matra Djet has become quite the collector’s piece, remaining to this day an atypical sports car and a very rare sight indeed on the road.
