Alpine A220

The first A220 started its career in the season of 1968 (24 Hours of Le Mans), but proved to be unreliable and weak, even with its 310 hp. The car evolved in 1969, mainly in terms of ground clearance – which was reduced – and its bodywork, in order to accommodate a V8! However, its power remained identical. Although the A210 handled itself well, no A220 saw the finishing line, with No. 29 (Depailler-Jabouille) cruising through 209 laps, No. 31 (Therier-Nicolas) finishing 160, and No. 28 (Cortanze-Vinatier) completing a mere 133. Unfortunately, this would be the last A220 prototype presented by Alpine and Renault, who left the prototype competition behind them after that.
