At the end of 2003, the World Rally Championship ended with the traditional round in Great Britain. The season proved to be full of surprises, with newcomer Citroën dominating and Subaru driver Petter Solberg securing three victories. At the Wales Rally, three drivers were still contender for the title: Sébastien Loeb, then leader of the championship, Petter Solberg and Carlos Sainz. From the start of the rally, Sébastien Loeb battled for victory against a highly motivated Solberg! The Norwegian, already winner here in 2002, was determined to give everything to win the rally and claim the world championship title. In SS3, Carlos Sainz retired after crashing. Citroën wanted to secure the manufacturers' title and asked Loeb not to attack the Subaru driver. Solberg took the lead at the end of SS4 and held on to it until the rally finished at Margam Park. Petter Solberg rejoices and lets his joy explode. He becomes the first Norwegian driver to win the World Rally Championship. A historic moment in more ways than one. Indeed, he is currently the last world champion to drive a Subaru. A status that continues... but for how much longer?
