After a private project in Asia-Pacific, the Korean brand entered rallying in the mid-1990s in partnership with the British company Motor Sport Developments (MSD). Its journey began with the Hyundai Coupé Kit-Car. Two years later, Hyundai announced its arrival in rallying’s premier category, the WRC, which was highly attractive to Asian manufacturers at the time. The Hyundai Accent WRC was quickly developed alongside the Coupé’s drivers, Alister McRae (brother of Colin) and Kenneth Eriksson. After a learning season in 2000, the Hyundai World Rally Team returned with higher ambitions for the 2001 season. For its first Monte Carlo Rally, the Accent WRC relied on 1997 winner Piero Liatti and Alister McRae to bring home a solid result. The Italian retired on the second stage due to engine failure, but Alister McRae finished in 7th place—a strong performance on a very tricky event.
