When Volkswagen wanted to offer a luxury sedan to take on the competition, the result was the Phaeton! While marketing such a model was highly surprising for the German manufacturer, the biggest surprise was found under the hood: a massive twelve-cylinder engine developing up to 450 horsepower. This colossal project was launched by Ferdinand Piëch, head of the brand at the time. It was a technical and technological challenge that also led to the construction of the Gläserne Manufaktur (Transparent Factory) in Dresden. Produced between 2002 and 2016, the Phaeton remains an atypical model for Volkswagen, as well as one of its greatest achievements.
