Although the brand is generally associated with rallying, it also tried its hand at Endurance racing. In the 1960s, the manufacturer developed several prototypes, and by the end of the decade, the French carmaker set its sights on overall victory to challenge the heavyweights of the discipline (Ford, Porsche, Ferrari…). It was with this goal in mind that the Alpine A220 was developed for the 1968 and 1969 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The A220 featured a V8 engine specifically designed for the occasion, once again created by Amédée Gordini. On the track, four A220s were entered in 1969 (numbers 28 to 31). No. 30 was driven by Henri Grandsire and Jean-Claude Andruet. Unfortunately, like two of the other A220s, it did not finish the race. Despite its reliability issues, the A220 won a lasting place in the hearts of fans of the brand and of the legendary Le Mans race.
