In 1999, Renault presented a concept car imagining the “coupe space” of the future. This concept generated a lot of buzz, and Matra was entrusted with the development and production of a series model. The Avantime was finally launched in 2001. The production version was very close to the concept car, which is rare in the automotive industry. This “coupe space” shared many components with the Espace III, but stood out from its big brother with a very bold design. Audacity is what best defines this Avantime. The panoramic glass roof was designed to bring in plenty of light, while the interior offered high-end coupe comfort. Likely too avant-garde, the Avantime did not achieve the expected commercial success. Production was halted at the end of 2003, just two years after its release. Nevertheless, the model remains highly acclaimed by its fan community. Today, its modern design still looks remarkably current. As a result, the Avantime has become a collector’s item, symbolizing an era when the automotive world offered truly original and innovative models.
