Since 1999, Skoda has been competing in the top category of the World Rally Championship (WRC). The Octavia flew the Czech flag against Subaru, Mitsubishi, Ford, Peugeot, and Hyundai. The 2001 WRC season kicked off with the traditional Monte Carlo Rally. Armin Schwarz and Bruno Thiry were Skoda's two official drivers. Armin Schwarz was aiming to repeat his strong performance from the previous year (7th place). Very quickly, he found himself fighting for the top 5 overall. On Sunday, he even climbed onto the provisional podium and entered a battle with François Delecour for third place. In the end, the Frenchman's Ford got the better of the Skoda, and Schwarz finished 4th. This remains the best asphalt result for the Octavia WRC in the world championship. For the German driver, it was also the start of his best season with Skoda!
